These are living witnesses of a unique European folk tradition, which supposedly started in the 15th/16th century and which still characterise the local image in the south of Oberlausitz and in neighbouring northern Bohemia and lower Silesia. On the last Sunday in May of each year, an open-house event is staged to view these traditional homes.
These traditional homes are especially conspicuous in the town of:
- Bertsdorf
- Waltersdorf
- Großschönau
- Seifhennersdorf
- Lückendorf
The huge Zittau lenten veil is the only one of its kind in Germany, and at 8.20 meters tall and 6.80 meters wide, it's the largest surviving lenten veil anywhere. The 15 square meter 'small' Zittau lenten veil is the only lenten veil of the so-called 'Arna Christi' type. Only six veils of this kind have survived worldwide.

The Karasek museum in Seifhennersdorf features a year-round exhibit of robber and smuggler artefacts from centuries past. The Zittauer Gebirge area and Oberlausitz provided numerous bands of robbers and smugglers with a hiding place in the 18th century. The most famous of these was the robber baron Karasek.
The originally erected, farmers', sleeping, and living quarters provide a fascinating impression of the life of weavers around 1800.
